chilling account of finding John O'Keeffe's lifeless body in the snow
Jennifer McCabe recounts harrowing discovery on Day 14 of Karen Read murder trial
Witness provides jurors with emotional testimony about finding 16-year police veteran unconscious in snowbank
A fourth week of the Karen Read murder trial kicks off Tuesday with the jury set to hear more testimony from heartbroken Jennifer McCabe and other witnesses who witnessed the tragic event.
Jennifer McCabe, whose husband, Matt McCabe, is a police officer in Canton, Massachusetts, took the witness stand last week and provided jurors with a chilling account of finding John O'Keeffe's lifeless body in the snow on February 4, 2023, near the home of accused murderer Karen Read.
McCabe testified that she was driving home from work when she saw O'Keeffe lying in the snow. She said she stopped her car and got out to help, and immediately realized that O'Keeffe was not breathing and had no pulse.
O'Keeffe, a 16-year veteran of the Canton Police Department, was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. He had suffered skull fractures and swelling to his eyes, consistent with being beaten.
McCabe's testimony was the most emotional of the trial so far, and her account of finding O'Keeffe's body left many in the courtroom in tears. Her testimony will likely be a key piece of evidence for the prosecution as they seek to prove that Read murdered O'Keeffe.
The trial is expected to continue for several more weeks, and it is sure to be closely watched by the community and the law enforcement community.
